By learning how to create entirely unique WordPress powered sites, you can unleash WordPress' full potential and move beyond being "simply a blog platform."

Revisions for 2019: A new three-part tutorial on creating our own unique block type for WordPress's new "Gutenberg" Block Editor.

I've studied WordPress, PHP, and JavaScript for the past 12 years, and I'm ready to share what I've learned with you. Join me on this adventure to learn WordPress development.

Together, we will create a website for a hypothetical university, learning the following things as we go:

  • Install WordPress on your personal computer to get a private test version of the platform to work with.
  • Learn about the PHP programming language (this is what powers WordPress)
  • Establish a New Theme You'll discover how to transform any HTML template into a functional WordPress theme.
  • Make your own custom fields and post types.
  • Link many bits of content together (e.g. a professor and a program)
  • Learn the fundamentals of JavaScript (object-oriented)
  • Make use of the WP REST API.
  • Learn JavaScript so you can instantly interface with the WordPress backend.
  • Allow users to register for a free account on our website.
  • Create a "My Notes" function (user specific single page application with real-time CRUD actions)
  • Allow users to "like" or "heart" professors, which will instantly change the professor's like count.
  • Launch our website live on the internet for everyone to see.
